This article is for you if you are wondering how to open files in a particular program. An example is if you want to open a PDF file which opens in Adobe but you would prefer it to open in Google Chrome.


Opening in a different program as a one off

To open in a particular program as a one off we will be demonstrating with opening a PDF file into Google Chrome, the default format will stay as Adobe so for this you would need to do the following steps.

  • Navigate to the file you would like to open in a different program.
  • Right click on the file.
  • Navigate to Open with...
  • Select the program you would like to open with.
  • This will then open the file in the program you prefer.

This will then allow you to open in Google Chrome but you have other options such as Microsoft Edge or Word.


Setting a default program open with

To set the default program that you open PDFs with so that you don't need to right click everytime, please follow the steps below.

  • Navigate to the file you would like to open in a different format. 
  • Right click on the file.
  • Select 'Properties'
  • Go to 'Change' on the 'Properties' window.
  • Select the program that you would like to set as default.
  • Click 'Apply'
  • Return to the file you would like to open so you can open it.
  • This will then open the file in the program you prefer for that machine.
